Onion TV showing Kim Jong Il's popularity at 120 per cent has about as much credibility as the DPRK (North Korea) Friendship Society inviting, courtesy of a comment on another blog, our former leader Robert Doyle to become a member. Both are spoofs.

More important us in the Liberal Party is the incompetence of the Bracks government. Read about bad management on the Frankston railway line, the inability of the Bracks government to run trains on time or to repair bridges on time and on budget.

Shadow Minister for Roads, Terry Mulder, today called upon Minister for Roads, Tim Pallas and local Labor MPs Janice Munt (Mordialloc), Alistair Harkness (Frankston) and Jenny Lindell (Carrum) to ensure that Mordialloc Creek bridge works also occurred at night to speed them up.

"The 60 week construction period is unacceptable. The Liberal Party understands that VicRoads and the contractors Cut and Fill Pty Ltd have yet to resolve how much of the project can be carried out at night, even though workmen are protected by concrete New Jersey barriers. The north end of the bridge has commercial properties nearby. At the very least, works at this end should be occurring 24 hours a day. Residents at the bridge's south end may also prefer a vastly reduced works period rather than 14 months of severe disruption to their lives.

"While the 55 minute delays being experienced this week may reduce a little as some motorists try the limited number of congested alternative routes, VicRoads lacks any understanding that even a halving of current delays sees return commuters facing extra hour in their car every day.

"Minister for Public Transport Lynne Kosky has failed to announce even one extra train on the Frankston line to give some commuters an alternative to the daily chaos. An extra morning 'short working' train from Cheltenham to Flinders Street would relieve some of the overcrowding, just like there are two new morning trains from Westall and Oakleigh on the Dandenong line."

Mr Mulder said that Tim Pallas and local Labor MPs were unwilling to speed up the project through working at night because of the cost of opening quarries, tips and other associated

"VicRoads' consultation with local residents and traders has been a sham, with its engineers determined to replace the bridge with little reference to how it would affect motorists' lives.

"When Mr James Burton, a project manager from Mount Eliza, spoke to VicRoads, one of the engineers overseeing the project said he was 'surprised by the number of people who travel from south on the highway.' Why didn't VicRoads civil engineers talk to their traffic engineer colleagues and take into account existing traffic volumes before closing what are effectively two car lanes? Mr Burton questions why the bridge is not being initially widened adjacent to the existing lanes, prior to work on those existing lanes, which is standard practice in other projects."

Mr Mulder said that VicRoads' 'tweaking' of traffic lights on other major roads to provide longer cycles for particular turns would only be of marginal assistance.

"Working at night and investigating whether the construction method can be altered will reduce the 'Labor pains' that commuters from as far afield as Mount Eliza or St Kilda are experiencing due to Tim Pallas' inability to properly manage the bridge replacement", Mr Mulder said.
