Andrew Landeryou wrote: "WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE HER"

Andrew Landeryou wrote a curious, worrying if not outright disturbing article titled: "WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE HER".

Landeryou writes: "A meeebo using patriot asked: [18:14] Freedom Fighter: Would you take a bullet for Mrs Mirabella? In the name of freedom ... / [18:16] Freedom Fighter: Your silence says it all, you're a patriot".

Bullets? Politicians? Fighters? Is Landeryou serious?

Mrs Sophie Mirabella is one of our best MHRs. She is destined to great things. She serves her electorate well.

One of the issues that is of great importance throughout her electorate of Indi is rail safety. This is of course a state matter and we of the Liberal Party take it very seriously.

That's why we've set up a rail crossing safety inquiry in the upper house. The Labor Party under Minister Kosky do nothing while the Liberal Party acts. Read our media release:

Subject : OPPOSITION SETS UP RAIL CROSSING SAFETY INQUIRY
Author : Philip Davis MLC
The Upper House has adopted a Liberal Party resolution to refer the problem of safety at railway level crossings to a parliamentary standing committee.

On a motion proposed today by Opposition Upper House Leader, Philip Davis, the Parliament's Road Safety Committee will be required to report by the end of February next year on the implementation of technologies to improve safety at level crossings.

Mr Davis said rail crossing safety was an urgent priority following the loss of 11 lives in the collision of a truck and train near Kerang on June 5, which brought to 19 the number of Victorians to die in truck-train collisions since October, 2002.

He said potentially the most disastrous and damaging collisions with trains at level crossings involved heavy vehicles, and the national Rail Co-operative Research Centre had established that two-thirds of the fatalities occur at crossings in country areas.

"As well as the tragic loss of lives, the injuries and personal and community trauma they cause, these collisions also claim a high economic cost in terms of damage to vehicles, rolling stock and freight and disruption to freight services," Mr Davis said.

"The Australasian Railway Association calculates the immediate damage from collisions over the past 14 months at $200 million nationally, and collisions in Victoria have accounted for most of that cost.

"Level crossings pose a high risk of very major incidents, as we have seen in recent times, but it is of real concern that rail operators reported more than 90 near misses in Victoria during 2006.

"The risk will increase dramatically in the light of forecasts that heavy haulage traffic on the eastern Australian transport corridor will double in the next five to 10 years. This makes it imperative to identify the principal causes and the most effective solutions, and to begin implementing those solutions as soon as possible."

But Mr Davis said the Labor Government's current approach - through spasmodic awareness campaigns, an ad hoc program to upgrade crossings and minimal trials of surveillance technology - was not the answer.

"Work by Rail CRC scientists has found high risk driver behaviour to be a key factor in crashes at rail crossings, yet Victoria has no research-based educational programs to improve driver behaviour," he said.

"The Government's recently announced program to upgrade crossings came in the immediate aftermath of the Kerang disaster, but it has been put in place in the absence of sound evidence to define the most effective safety measures and the areas of most urgent need."

Was this story in today's Australian inspired by Landeryou?

Rorters set bankruptcy record

THE federal Government's insolvency agency has received a record 1104 complaints about people allegedly rorting the bankruptcy system with offences estimated at $20.7 million...

We Waverley Young Libs are very disappointed this morning. Our preferred candidate, the lovely Jaci Hang, was unsuccessful as a candidate for the Cotham ward by-election in Boroondara. So too was Katerine Walsh, who received a lot of publicity on the Landeryou blog but it wasn't enough as she was clearly outvoted by a Mr Meggs, who we regret to say is not a member of our grand party. Bad for Boroondara. We want Libs.

Bad luck Jaci. You are a grand Young Lib. You were a great candidate. We'll back you in the future. Boroondara residents don't know what they've missed. Next time we're sure you'll be successful.
